A Day at Da Adolfo

The famed Da Adolfo boat.

The instruction seemed simple enough. “Just meet at the dock. There will be a boat with a fish on it every 30 minutes or so."

I’m not sure if you’ve ever attempted to board a boat at the Positano waterfront, but to say that it’s chaotic is an understatement. On a busy summer’s day, there would be anywhere between 500 and 1000 people milling around waiting to catch ‘their boat’. The only problem is that you’re never really sure where to go for ‘your boat’.

After standing back observing the play for a while, we started to understand the organised chaos, and then saw the famed Da Adolfo fish coming towards us. Manovering our way towards the front of the throng, we took off our shoes (oh how I love boat life), took the sturdy hand of an Italian seaman and stepped on board, ready to motor along the Amalfi coastline to enjoy a day at Da Adolfo.

It’s a place famed for its simplicity and delicious cuisine, focusing on fresh seafood and a local house speciality, mozzarella baked on lemon leaves.

Above all, Da Adolfo is a place to relax. The open air restaurant only operates during the summer season, with a simple canopy providing shade and a pebbled stone floor to match that of the beach.

Tables are packed in like sardines, with less than an inch between each one, but here it serves to create a cozy atmosphere where new friendships blossom amongst travellers from across the globe as the wine flows and everyone unwinds.

Enjoyment is the order of the day at Da Adolfo. The wait staff are energetic and are there to entertain. There’s jokes flying left, right and centre and laughter and music are the perfect accompaniment to the gentle waves.

And the best bit, once you’ve made it to Da Adolfo, the table is yours for the day - so sit back, relax and make the most of it, perhaps even having a dip between courses.

The stunning vista of Positano as you return from Da Adolfo is a sight to behold.
