MY DREAM DAY - HOBART

Constitution Dock, Hobart

What’s the best way to get to know a city? Ask a local.

In an effort to go ‘beyond the Google guidebook’, I’m delighted to introduce my new series called “My Dream Day”, where well-travelled individuals, who know all about the ins and outs of the best places to go across the globe, are asked about how they would spend a “dream 24 hours” in their hometown.

For our first location, we head to Hobart, where I spoke with Kirsten Galliott, one of the most influential media voices in Australia. Kirsten’s career spans newspapers, magazines, television and radio, including editor roles at the(sydney)magazine, Sunday Life, InStyle and Qantas magazine. Kirsten is currently the Head of Content - Travel & Business for Medium Rare Content Agency, overseeing the content strategies for Qantas, Commbank and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In her almost 10 years of working with Qantas, she has likely influenced a holiday of yours along the way.

Kirsten relocated to Hobart with her family in 2020. Whilst often travelling for work, she loves coming home and enjoying the best of what Hobart has to offer, and we are so very lucky to have her share how she would spend a perfect day in Hobart.

My dream day would be a Sunday.

It would start at Farm Gate Market, a bustling farmers market on Bathurst Street in the heart of the CBD, where I go almost every Sunday and meet up with my mother to do some shopping and have a coffee and one of Wood Fiery Redhead's epic breakfast buns.

Then we would head to Long Beach with our dog - that's not far from our house in Sandy Bay - via Blac Fig for another coffee.

We love a Sunday drive so perhaps we'd drive to the Coal River Valley. There are a host of new cellar doors opening up, including Stargazer, Pressing Matters and Tolpuddle, which is so exciting.

We love going to Pooleys for lunch, where we relax outside with a delicious glass of riesling and a slice of pizza.

We'd then do a wander down the streets of Richmond, stopping in at the antique stores for a browse.

A dream is not to cook on Sunday night so dinner would be at Ogee, a wonderful neighbourhood restaurant in North Hobart.

Am I working on Monday? If not, we might swing past Salamanca and walk along Constitution Dock before having a nightcap at Institut Polaire.

It’s now also my dream day in Hobart, that's for sure. Enjoy.
